Hyperpigmentation, otherwise known as age spots, Liver Spots, Senile or Solar Lentigines and Sun Spots are flat spots that vary in colour from brown to grey and black, and most commonly appear on the skin of people 40 plus who have been exposed to excessive sunlight or UV rays. However a culture of over exposure to the sun and UV tanning beds from the teenage years has meant that any people younger than 40 are starting to find age spots on their face, neck, shoulders and back. Your GP will diagnose age spots, and is always worth consulting when they appear in case it is something else.
What causes Hyperpigmentation
Although we don’t know what exactly causes hyperpigmentation, they appear due to an over production of melanin in our skin often brought on by lengthy over exposure to the sun and UV rays. People with fair skin are most susceptible to age spots as they age, however excessive sun bathing with protection and frequent use of sun beds can cause age spots in people with all skin types.
Treating Hyperpigmentation
Unlike skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis which can be painful, age spots do not cause direct health concerns, but can have mental and emotion side effects as people worry about how they look. The very best way to treat and prevent further age spots is to avoid the sun at the strongest part of the day, apply plenty of sun lotion with a strong SPF and avoiding sunbeds. For age spots that have already appeared, there are many over the counter and stronger prescription ointments and lotions avaible designed to reduce the appearance of age spots, many of these contains bleaching agents such as hydroquionone which can take many weeks to have an effect on the skin pigmentation and can cause further sensitivity to sunlight and UV rays.
