Dealing with Psoriasis

Psoriasis can be a painful skin condition that commonly occurs in around the arms and legs but it can spread all over the body and face.

What causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a condition caused when our body’s immune system mistakes healthy skin cells for infected cells and reproduce new skin cells at an accelerated and unnecessary rate, these skin cells reach the surface before they are ready, causing red, flaky patches of skin as the young skin cells die. Like eczema the exact cause of Psoriasis is unknown but has been linked to environmental triggers including alcohol abuse, smoking, stress, and certain medications. These are all triggers which can reduce our immune system and in turn our bodies try to counter it by over producing skin cells.     

Treating Psoriasis

Sadly there is still no cure for psoriasis, avoiding the environmental trigger is the best way but that is not always that easy. So treating psoriasis comes down to relieving the pain and discomfort associated with the condition. There are a range of treatments for psoriasis which range from topical creams through to strong prescription drugs. One of the most common topical treatments is a corticosteroid which is topical steroid which is available in a range of creams, lotions, ointments and gels, the results vary dependent on the strength but work by reducing inflammation, much like Vitamin D analogue creams and Calineurin Inhibitors, none can be used for long term treatment as they known to cause skin thinning, increased susceptibility to infection and in some cases burning due to overuse.
